Do I need to pay taxes on my Petbnb earnings?

Modified on Mon, 2 Dec at 11:33 AM

As a pet sitter or dog walker on Petbnb, it is assumed that you are running your own small business through the Petbnb platform. This means you are responsible each year for reporting your Petbnb income in your tax return and for paying any applicable taxes on your income.

We understand that filing taxes can be complicated. We can assist with basic information and tools to help you complete your tax return correctly.

Please note: Petbnb cannot provide tax advice. We recommend contacting a tax advisor if you have specific questions, need tax advice, or are unsure about your particular situation.

What is DAC7?

DAC7 is a European Union directive that came into effect on January 1, 2023. This new directive requires online platforms, such as Petbnb, to collect and report tax data about service providers generating income through the platform. For Petbnb, this means that we are legally obligated by the EU to collect additional tax data from you if you are a sitter residing in an EU member state. We are also required to share this tax data, along with your earnings for the year, with the country where you live.

As a result of DAC7, Petbnb is responsible for reporting information about your activities on the Petbnb platform. This directive applies throughout the EU to all online platforms with sellers residing in the EU. Therefore, you may receive similar requests and notifications if you are active on other online platforms in the EU.

How does this apply to me?

For 2023, DAC7 applies to you if you meet all three of the following criteria:

  1. You became a sitter on Petbnb in 2023.
  2. You reside in a country that is a member of the European Union.
  3. You completed a booking on Petbnb in 2023.

From 2024 onward, DAC7 will apply to you if you meet both of the following criteria:

  1. You reside in a country that is a member of the European Union.
  2. You completed a booking on Petbnb in the relevant calendar year.

What information is shared with the country where I live?

Under DAC7, we are required to collect and share the following data with the country where you reside.

Information provided by you:

  • First and last name
  • Address
  • Country of residence

Information provided by Petbnb:

  • Earnings from bookings you completed during each quarter of the calendar year, and the number of bookings
  • Any fees deducted from the amount paid to you each quarter (including service fees charged by Petbnb)

Where can I see the DAC7 information shared by Petbnb?

Petbnb will provide you with an electronic summary of the tax data reported to the country where you reside by January 31 following the relevant calendar year. You do not need to take any action upon receiving this summary, but it can be a useful tool when preparing your tax return.

As the end of the year approaches, we will update this article with additional information on how to view your data.
